Castle Mountain Resort Becomes Alberta’s First Whitebark Pine Friendly Ski Area
Castle Mountain Resort, located in the Rocky Mountains of southwest Alberta, has officially completed certification as a Whitebark Pine Friendly Ski Area, the first ski area in Alberta to achieve this designation.
This recognition highlights ski areas that are leaders in the conservation and management of whitebark and limber pine, two iconic high-elevation tree species that play a critical role in mountain ecosystems across western Canada.
Through this certification, Castle Mountain Resort joins a growing movement to protect these threatened species while engaging the communities that live, work, and recreate in mountain landscapes. The program aims to:
- Recognize ski areas demonstrating leadership in whitebark and limber pine conservation
- Increase awareness among ski areas and their visitors about the decline of these species
- Encourage stewardship and active management to support long-term ecosystem resilience
As part of the initiative, new interpretive signage about whitebark pine has been installed at Castle Mountain Resort to help educate visitors about the importance of these trees and ongoing conservation efforts in the region. Check it out during your next visit!
