Species At Risk

SARA in Canada

Due to multiple threats, both whitebark and limber pine are species at risk.

Whitebark pine is listed as an endangered species under the Species at Risk Act (2012) and limber pine has been recommended for this federal listing (2014) as well as beings listed provincially in Alberta (2007). These listings offer varying levels of protection, depending upon jurisdiction.

These are pioneer and foundation species that establish habitat and provide nutrition for many other species. Due to their ecological value but lack of commercial value, maintaining critical habitat for them is challenging. The WPEF-C has developed many relationships to help restore these iconic trees, and several board members have contributed to their recovery plans
